Corporate history Paulmann

Lighting that feels good, for more than 35 years

In 1968, with a lot of experience in the lighting market, Rüdiger Paulmann started his own trade representative agency for luminaires. In the years that followed, he noticed: There was a lack of decorative light bulbs. Beautiful, exquisite luminaires were usually only sold with standard bulbs.

The creative business man conducted the first tests in the cellar of his house in Wennigsen in 1975. After several months, he successfully produced the first refined incandescent glass bulb. Many decorative ideas followed, such as smoky or mirrored lamps, ice crystal, ice crystal amber and crocoisite designs or e.g. the well-known gold light, which generates soft, warm light for a cosy living atmosphere.

In 1978, the year in which the company was founded, the first ornamental lamps were produced in professional form. This formed the foundation for the booming success of the new company. At the birth of Paulmann as company, it consisted of the managing director, a commercial clerk and a first sales representative.

By 1984, the staff numbered 15 and Paulmann had made a name for itself in the field of decorative incandescent bulbs. The company now expanded into the fledgling halogen market. Again Paulmann succeeded in making the brilliant halogen light cosy and homelike. With special glass-on-glass coatings, exquisite lamps with hues such as gold or rosé were created.

Halogen wire systems, which had hitherto only been used in business environments, were added to the assortment in 1986. Like many of the light solutions that followed, these are lighting systems that can be used universally, by anyone. Parallel to the company developing new lighting ideas, the Paulmann team grew year by year.

In 1988 , recessed lighting became the focus of the product range. Even back then, the assortment depth was appreciated by the customers. Today, Paulmann is market leader for this product group.

The first sales subsidiary was founded in Austria in 1990, the next followed 1993, in France. From then on, own Paulmann subsidiaries and representations spread across Europe. The high-quality lighting products and accessories developed by an in-house design team won over customers in many countries.

In 1996, construction began on a modern logistics centre in Springe-Völksen. Parallel to construction of the new building, the information technology was converted to the SAP management system.

The company, with 200 employees, relocated to the new headquarters in Springe-Völksen in July 1997, after a planning and construction phase of only 15 months. The administrative and logistics centre is the headquarters in Europe.

In 2000, Paulmann set up a subsidiary in Spain; thus the company was now present in 20 countries.

Detlev Paulmann took over the management as CEO along with Thomas Hamann and Dirk Oldenburg in 2004; his father Rüdiger became President of the newly founded Advisory Board.

The German association of family entrepreneurs (Die Familienunternehmer - ASU), honoured Detlev Paulmann with the 2011 entrepreneur award for his commitment to his company and his employees.

In 2012, the last remaining conventional incandescent bulbs were discontinued, in acc. with the EU directive. With light technology such as LEDs, energy-saving bulbs, low-voltage and high-voltage halogen products, Paulmann offers visually appealing, fully equal alternatives.

After more than 35 years of light history 278 employees work for the company in Springe 2014. In addition more than 90 people are employed in our subsidiaries in Austria, France and elsewhere. Together with an additional sales presence in 40 European countries, the Paulmann team consists of approximately 500 people. With an open and cooperative company culture, our motto is "light by people, for people".

Pleasant light and energy efficiency for all living spaces – this demand is met by around 2,500 lamps and luminaires using light technology such as LEDs, energy-saving bulbs, as well as low-voltage and high-voltage halogen products. Today, LED products account for approx. 60% of the sales. Recessed lighting, suspension and rail systems, spotlights, picture, workplace, wall and ceiling lamps fulfil the numerous diverse needs of people looking for light that make them feel at home.

Customers can find lamps and luminaires of Paulmann at almost all known hardware stores.
