One of the connections after the first light is causing a short circuit. Check to make sure that no nails or screws have penetrated the cable. Check all of the connection points again.

Can the liner melt or constitute a fire hazard?

Generally, the specified minimum installation heights should be observed and accent or security lamps (light bulbs with aluminium reflectors) should be used (normally included in Paulmann recessed lighting). Heat build-up must be prevented; do not place insulation material on the transformer or lamp bases. In the case of crawl space liners, it is a good idea to cover the liner in the area of the installation opening with a metal sheet or perforated sheeting so that the liner cannot buckle or sag due to excessive heat exposure. In general, flame-resistant or non-flammable insulation materials should be used.

For outdoor use, be sure to use lighting fixtures with at least IP23 class splash protection. Only bulbs with safety glass should be used. Due to the possible effect of moisture, recessed lighting made of galvanized aluminium or plastic is recommended.

In general, galvanized aluminium lighting fixtures are the most resistant to corrosion. There is a chance build-up could result from salty air in maritime climates; this coating can be removed using a normal cleaning agent.

Recessed lighting can also be used in bathrooms. Please note that Paulmann recessed lighting must be installed where it is protected from splashing water and that lamps with safety glass should be used. For moisture-prone areas, there are special hot-dip galvanised aluminium lighting fixtures (rust-resistant).

The transformer has a capacity monitor; this means that this transformer automatically switches off for safety reasons if the transformer becomes too hot. In this case, check whether heat build-up is resulting from any insulating material on the transformer or if there is not sufficient hollow, aerated space behind the ceiling.

The minimum installation height for the respective type of recessed lighting is specified on recessed lighting sets. If there is not sufficient clearance above the suspended ceiling, this leads to the following problem: The height and width dimensions of the transformer fit through the installation opening, but the length of the transformer prevents it from being pushed into the opening. The transformer must be installed somewhere else, but somewhere where it continues to be accessible. In our product assortment, there are special round transformers for easy installation in hollow ceilings.

To insure that the recessed light is securely attached to the ceiling, the retaining clips are mounted as shown in the diagram. Also secure the clips to the braces of the recessed light (see photo below). Next, guide the long section of the retaining clips (shown above in red, no. 1) into the installation opening. Now press down the short section of the retaining clips (shown above in blue, no. 2), to tension the clip. Once the recessed lighting fixture is pressed into the installation opening, it sits securely in place.

Depending on the type, furniture recessed lighting fixtures (MM) require a minimum installation depth. Installation depths below the specification will lead to temperatures significantly higher than 90 °C. For this reason, installation in a blind hole is not recommended. If this cannot be avoided, the lamp capacity must not exceed 10 W.

The cornered ends of the Easy Click circlip are inserted into the two holes on the side panel of the lamp base. The bracket for locking the ring points outwards. The SECURITY bulb is now placed in the bulb socket. The Easy Click circlip is pressed against the bulb and clicks into its side opening.

The SECURITY bulb is inserted first of all in the ring of the recessed lighting fixture. Next, the circlip is mounted with the holding tab pointing to the floor. Needle-nosed pliers can be used here as an assembly aid. The circlip is now pressed against the SECURITY bulb until the bulb is centred in the recessed lighting fixture.

The heat given off by the bulb causes the housing of the recessed lighting fixture to heat up as well. The housing of the lighting fixture has contact with normal, flammable materials after assembly. To limit the temperature at the installation surface of the recessed lighting fixture (max. 90°C), the installation diameter needs to be larger than the geometrical dimensions of the fixture require. This also applies for the installation depth specified in the assembly instructions. In addition to the required installation diameter and installation depth, it is also required for the lighting fixtures to be mounted in a hollow space. On the back side, the fixture must not come into contact with boundary surfaces at any side of the fixture. The hollow space must provide a minimum of 5 cm clearance between the recessed lighting fixture and boundary surfaces such as beams, crossbars, or insulation materials. If multiple recessed lighting fixtures will be installed in a suspended ceiling, there needs to be an uninterrupted hollow space. This should be larger than the minimum hollow space required for a single recessed lighting fixture, to prevent overheating. Only when observed together with the minimum installation conditions and the attached safety instruction are the requirements for the F-mark and MM-mark met, preventing excessive overheating.

What are the decals on the lighting fixtures for? Why do these need to be applied where they are visible?

The specifications on the decals for the lighting fixtures provide information for the proper installation and safe operation of the lighting fixture. They are specified by European norms required by European Directives and national laws.

The labels fall into three categories:

  • Labels that must be observed during the installation of the lighting fixtures (e.g. F, MM, protection class, voltage).
  • Labels that must be observed when changing the light bulb (e.g. voltage, max. power, special bulbs, safety glass)
  • Labels that must be observed during use (e.g. max. clearance from the illuminated surface)

According to the Standard, the decals have to be permanently attached to the lighting fixture and may not be removed.

How do Paulmann motion detectors work?

How do Paulmann motion detectors work?

The motion detector can detect motion if a heat source moves from one sector to another. These sectors are determined by the lens (hemisphere) of the motion detector. If the sensor is approached straight on, it takes longer to respond. However, if someone moves across the sectors, the sensor responds immediately. If the response of the motion detector is very delayed, it may be necessary to slightly rotate the motion detector in the ceiling or find a different installation position (this option is likely to be difficult or impossible in most cases).
