Lamp or luminaire

Lamps, light bulbs, luminaires - which is which?

Hello, my name is Anita. Welcome back to Paulmann's World of Light on YouTube.

Lamp, light bulb, luminaire. Three terms that are constantly interchanged. But which is which?

lamp or luminaire

This is a lamp. Many confuse the lamp with the luminaire.

Jens is holding a luminaire in his hand.

Jens, for example, isn’t the brightest lamp on the street. All jokes aside. Jens is holding a luminaire in his hand.

The trend is moving towards LED

In German a lamp is often referred to as a pear.

So a lamp is the illuminant, which is used in a luminaire.

In German a lamp is often referred to as a pear. This is down to the shape, but officially there is no such term.

Lamps, i.e. illuminants, are available in a variety of different forms. But the trend is clearly moving towards LED.

Luminaires with built-in LED modules

LEDs have a service life of 20,000 hours

To finish with I would like to confuse you a little bit.  I want to show you this luminaire. Here the LED modules are already built in and there is no need for individual lamps. A lamp and luminaire all rolled in to one.

There is no need to change the lamps in this luminaire. LEDs have a service life of 20,000 hours, that’s about 20 years. So replacing the lamps is just not necessary.

Floor lamp or floor luminaire?

Floor lamp or floor luminaire?

Sometimes even I say table lamp or floor lamp by mistake. But strictly speaking, it's a table luminaire and a floor luminaire.

You are now ready for your next purchase. Maybe you can even give your friends a few tips.
